Watching Movies
Romeo and Juliet, together in eternity --
the song whips warping from
a racing green Porsche on the Bonneville
Salt Flats: your heart beats faster, you
blink and are in the car, washline around
your wrists. The go-go driver cackles
marvelously, forcing a black MG into
the pit. Poor Haji sobs in surprise, a
knife between her bared knockers and
for a moment you've forgotten who
threw it --
Clash of the Titans?
The Ten Commandments?
Lamplight
wrinkles across a bag of Doritos,
disconsolate on the coffee table --
pehaps it's only Pepsi that
makes your forehead throb.
The bitter old man in the wheelchair
slaps his stupid son, deserves to be
robbed blind, money for the taking --
but you are not there, not able.
Somewhere not far from you
kids listen to the radio:
black oaks fold the blue sky
over vast fields of wheat, a large
white Cadillac beneath six feet
of fecund Texas soil: your heart
beats slower, you blink.
