Sandman volume 5

I'm trying to do more on this blog, and one way is to post something when i finish reading a book. I've really enjoyed the Sandman series, and have been stretching reading them out (a single volume gets read in an evening). The reputation is richly deserved. The comics are always good at weaving realities together, but that almost seems prosaic in light of my normal reading material. The thing that I like in these is the way that the deity figures hold their true natures and mundane natures in balance. It's clever and ironic without being ponderous (most of the time, volume 4 is a little overwrought at first until Lucifer makes his move). The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You

A History of the World in Six Glasses

http://www.amazon.com/History-World-Six-Glasses/dp/0802714471

You can only read so many "history through the lens of this common product" books before they begin to run together a bit, but this was still enjoyable. I particularly liked the coffee chapter, which I haven't read as much about... Perhaps another way to look at it is that I read too much about beer, wine and whiskey?
